I'm Asking for Your Vote Tomorrow, March 6!

Monday, March 5, 2018. Hi. My name is Brent Beal, and I'm asking for your vote in the Democratic primary tomorrow, March 6.

There's a story behind this picture. It was taken last summer in the Dairy Queen in Diboll, down in Angelina County. I had just started a 50-city tour (www.beal2018.com/50_city_tour) and this was one of my first stops. I had put up a Facebook event with the time and date and I had showed up on time. I was there waiting for folks interested in meeting a long-shot congressional candidate to come by and chat. Heather and my three kids (pictured here: Kennedy, Marin and Stuart) drove down from Nacogdoches to say "hello" (just in case no one else showed up, they said). My middle daughter suggested a family "selfie" on their way out.

My wife, Heather, and I both teach at local universities (she's at SFA, I'm at UTTyler), and we're raising our family here in East Texas. I'm not a politician and I've never run for office, but I decided it was important that someone stand up and challenge Louie Gohmert. We deserve better representation. Many of our public schools are struggling, our kids are having a harder and harder time paying for job training and college, our manufacturing jobs are leaving, our small businesses are being squeezed out, and our neighbors are being deported. Many of us feel unsafe in our workplaces, our schools, and even our churches.

It shouldn't be this way. I want to do my part to fix it by fighting for our economic, educational, and physical security. You can read about my priorities at www.beal2018.com/issues.

Please make sure you vote tomorrow. I've spent the past 9 months traveling all over this district, talking to as many people as I can. I'm committed to serving East Texas. Together, let's make 2018 count!

Be Part of the Groundswell on March 6!

Sunday, March 4, 2018. Brent recently attended an event for Beto O'Rourke, a Democrat challenging Ted Cruz in this year's Texas Senate race. Brent shared some thoughts with me about what Beto's and other Democratic challengers' campaigns mean for Texans:

"I think Beto matters because of what he and his campaign have brought out in people around the state. He's put a target on his back and charged into the breach, and we should admire him for that, but I'd like to focus for a second on everyone following in his wake--people standing up all over Texas and defending the principles and values that have made us a great country. People want a sense of decency and service in government. They want to talk about what makes our communities stronger and what makes our lives richer. Beto's campaign has been a powerful reminder to those of us who value these things that we aren't alone. There are a lot of us, and if we connect, get to know each other, and come together to back a candidate like Beto, there isn't anything we can't do. We can make our voices heard, we can out-fundraise the establishment, and we can take back a Senate seat, even in Texas."

Help Us Promote Brent Beal at Your Polling Place!

Saturday, March 3, 2018. We could use your help at polling places during the primary election this Tuesday, March 6. We need supporters who are willing to stand 100 feet from polling place entrances, holding campaign signs and handing out cards to people before they vote. If you can spend some time promoting the campaign outside polling places and need a sign and some cards, please email volunteer@beal2018.com, or go to www.beal2018.com/coordinators and contact a volunteer coordinator in your county.

Also, thanks to Marc Wheeler, our Rusk County volunteer coordinator, for putting up several large campaign signs in prominent locations throughout the district! If you know of a location in your area that gets a lot of traffic and can accommodate a large sign, let Marc know by emailing him at marc@beal2018.com.

Together, let's make 2018 count!

Early Voting Ends Today--GO VOTE!

Friday, March 2, 2018. Today is the last day to vote early in the primary. If you haven't already voted, please take advantage of early voting by casting your ballot now. To find out where you can vote early, check out the voter information links we've compiled at www.beal2018.com/vote.

If you need more reasons to vote for Brent today, there are some excellent ones listed in this letter to the editor, written by Donna Hinson of Nacogdoches. Here's an excerpt:

"This is the first time that Brent has run for political office. I think he is a man of integrity and would represent everyone, not just a few. He is running on small contributions from ordinary citizens. ... He fully understands business and management practices and our area's needs. We all want change and someone who has not been a career politician who thinks only of himself. In my opinion, Brent is that person. He believes in better schools for our children and grandchildren, the resources needed for them as well as affordable junior colleges and universities so our children will be well trained for good-paying jobs in the future. He believes in encouraging small business, a reformed immigration system and much more than I have room to list here. ... I have never worked for a candidate or party before but feel we have not been represented well in our area for some time and we need someone like Brent in office. ... Vote for our own Brent Beal."

Thanks, Donna! For more information about Brent's priorities, you can read about them at www.beal2018.com/issues.

Our Revolution East Texas is thrilled to inform you that we have endorsed your candidacy for the United States House of Representatives!

We are excited you are passionate about making our economy work for everyone - including your stances on fighting crony capitalism and raising the minimum wage so that Americans working 40 hours a week do not live in poverty.

We applaud your positions on protecting the most vulnerable. We share the beliefs that women’s rights should be expanded, that DACA participants should be granted immediate citizenship, that our criminal justice system should be reformed for fairness for all people, and funding for social security and our veterans should be ensured and protected by the government.

Because of these and so many more stances you take, we are proud to endorse you in your candidacy and look forward to working with you in the days to come to help you win TX Congressional District 1.

Thank you for being a fellow revolutionary!

We couldn't have said it better ourselves. ;) Thanks to Our Revolution East Texas for their kind words and valuable endorsement. (If you're interested in joining Our Revolution East Texas, go to www.ourrevolution.com or www.facebook.com/OurRevolutionETX.)

Keep Our Campaign in the Press!

Thursday, December 21, 2017. Challenging an incumbent like Louis Gohmert is no easy task, which is why we're so grateful to you and our other dedicated supporters for spreading the word about our campaign. One simple thing you can do to get Brent's name and his positions on key issues into the minds of voters is to write a letter to the editor and submit it to your local newspaper. (To read about Brent's positions on the issues, please go to www.beal2018.com/issues.)

Before you start, you might want to get some tips and tricks about writing an effective letter to the editor that has a greater chance of being published. You can find a list of useful guidelines at www.ncte.org/action/write. You can also read an excellent example of a letter to the editor, written by Mike Lewis, our Campaign Committee Chair, and recently published in the Longview News-Journal, at www.news-journal.com/news/2017/dec/05/letters-on-tax-bill-electoral-college-medicare-shi/.

Thank You, Donors!

Thursday, December 7, 2017. Great news! Thanks to you, our amazing donors, Brent's campaign for Congress has raised more than $40,000! Because of your donations, we have been able to build the campaign in much-needed ways, including hiring campaign staff, paying for access to valuable political databases, and creating promotional materials and merchandise. We deeply appreciate your support.

Brent's next fundraising goal is to raise an additional $15,000 for get-out-the-vote mailers leading up to the Democratic primary on March 6. We will print a series of mailers and send them to 10,000 likely voters in the district. Get-out-the-vote efforts can make or break a campaign, so please contribute what you can. Your donation could make all the difference!

To donate, go to http://www.beal2018.com/donate. If you know others who might be interested in supporting Brent's run for Congress, forward this email and encourage them to donate as well.

And if you or someone you know is willing to host a private fundraiser for the campaign, please contact Kate Murray Langston, Fundraising Coordinator, at kate@beal2018.com or 903-746-4925. Kate has experience both in politics, having worked for US Representatives Charlie Wilson and Jim Turner, and in nonprofit fundraising. She can help you plan a successful event that will maximize donations and make all your hard work worthwhile.

Thank you again. We literally couldn't do this without your generosity.

We Need You as a Volunteer Coordinator!

Wednesday, December 6, 2017. We want a campaign that is representative of the entire district. We need at least one person from every county and city in the district to join our team as a volunteer coordinator. That's a minimum of 62 people--one volunteer coordinator in each of the 12 counties, and one in each of the 50 cities that Brent visited on his 50-city tour. Will you be one of them?

We have put together an online welcome packet that explains what volunteer coordinators do and how you can get started:

Follow the links in the packet for details. Go to http://www.beal2018.com/coordinatorlist to see a complete list of volunteer coordinator positions.

Meet Our Campaign Team

Friday, December 1, 2017. Brent has been putting together a great campaign team, and we thought you might like to meet some of us. These are four of the people who are working hard behind the scenes to help Brent become Congressman Beal in 2018.

Kimberly Brinkerhoff Baptista

I'm the campaign's Communications Director. I manage media coverage and have recently started coordinating internal communications, which is why I'm the one sending this email! You'll be hearing from me a lot in the coming months as we rev up for the primary on March 6th.

I have always worked in various aspects of media and communications--first as a magazine writer and editor, then as a rep at a PR firm, and finally as a book publicist. I have also volunteered as a PR person for activist organizations. I got to know Heather Olson Beal, Brent's wife, many years ago when we volunteered in the same organization, and through Heather, I got to know Brent. That explains why I'm working on this campaign even though I live in Wilmington, North Carolina. (I do have some Texas cred: Before I moved to North Carolina 5 years ago, I lived in the DFW area for 12 years, and my parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews all currently live in Texas.)

I support Brent's candidacy because I know him to be a decent and fair person whose political principles I share. I may not live in the district or even the state, but it's important for me and my children to have a congressional majority that can ensure we have the healthcare, education, and job opportunities we need.

Kate Murray Langston

Kate is the campaign's Fundraising Coordinator, and we're lucky to have her on board given her professional background. She works in social media marketing and nonprofit fundraising and previously served on the legislative staff of both US Rep. Charlie Wilson and US Rep. Jim Turner in Washington, DC. Kate is a native of Lufkin and a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University. She now lives in Longview.

Asked why she supports Brent's candidacy, Kate says, "I long to see commonsense representation return to my home district and am confident Brent will work for the best interests of the hard-working people of the 1st Congressional District."

Gabrielle Harris

Gabrielle is the campaign's Advisory Board Liaison. She is a freshman at Stephen F. Austin State University, studying political science. She's the chair of SFA's Progressive Student Coalition and is very excited to be part of the campaign.

Gabrielle explains her support for Brent's candidacy this way: "I support Brent because he is genuine. When I'm rambling off about spreadsheets, campaign work, voters, etc., he is always the one to bring it back and say, 'How are you today?' or 'Do you have any input or questions about this?' He never forgets to relate any issue back to the people. Simply put, most candidates don't do that. I am proud to support him."

Ellie O'Connor

Ellie is the campaign's Office Manager. Among many other things, she communicates with donors and processes donations. Ellie is junior at Stephen F. Austin State University and is an accounting major. She is Vice President of College Democrats, as well as being Vice President of Finance for Tri Delta. She plans to attend law school after graduating.

It's Official: I'm on the Ballot!

Monday, November 27, 2017. It's official! I'm running against Louie Gohmert in Texas's first congressional district. I mailed in my filing paperwork on Friday, November 13, and I am now listed as a Democratic candidate on Texas's Secretary of State website for the primary on March 6.

I submitted 837 signature (500 were required). In the weeks leading up to the filing deadline, I visited 50 cities and towns across the district gathering these signatures and listening to people talk about what they want from our government.
When I started this 50-city tour, I had three objectives:

1) I wanted to get to know the district better. We live in a beautiful place, deep East Texas, and it has been a privilege to visit mom and pop restaurants, Family Dollars, Dairy Queens, Whataburgers, and post office parking lot across the 12 counties in this congressional district--from Smith, parts of Wood and Upshur, to Gregg and Harrison, down to Nacogdoches, Angelina, San Augustine, and Sabine, with Panola, Rusk, and Shelby in between.

2) I wanted to listen to people. People are frustrated. They don’t feel like they have a voice. They don’t feel like our government is working to defend their interests. In fact, they don’t feel like government is working at all. People want to be able to work hard, play fair, and at the end of the day, be able to make a life for themselves and their families. They can sense that the system is rigged; they feel like they’re running in place, but they don’t know what to do about it.

3) I wanted to collect petition signatures to get on the ballot. But more than that, I wanted to get a sense of whether there was an appetite for change; if people were willing to stand up and defend some of our core democratic values that have been under attack recently. There are large numbers of people willing to stand up and fight. It’s been inspiring.

Thanks my family, our donors, our campaign staff, our advisory board, and all of the hard-working volunteers who made this possible. I'm honored to be an official candidate. I'm committed to holding Gohmert accountable in next year’s midterm elections.

Please join us by volunteering and/or making a donation today!

Smith and Nacogdoches: 50 City Tour

Friday, November 10, 2017. On the last day of his 50 City Tour, Brent visited Mt. Enterprise, Bullard, Flint, Noonday, Tyler, and Nacogdoches. Brent has traveled Texas's first congressional district meeting constituents and gathering filing petition signatures.

The most common complaint? People don't feel like Louie Gohmert listens to them or makes an honest effort to effectively represent them. People want their congressman to meet with them, to listen to them, and to represent them--and that's something broad segments of our population here in this congressional district don't feel that Gohmert makes an effort to do.

Other concerns? People want a representative who will work to make college affordable again, commit to protect our rural hospitals, fight to make sure everyone has access to the healthcare they need, and who will stand up for workers, entrepreneurs, and small and family-owned businesses in our communities.

Although this was the end of our 50 City Tour, it is just the beginning of our campaign. I'm committed to spending the next year fighting for the values we all care about: honesty, decency, competency, respect for our democratic institutions, and the notion that in a representative democracy whoever we elect has a duty to listen to and represent everyone.
